Amtrak would be the easiest way to get to Davis from Santa Cruz. You need to take a bus to the Santa Cruz Metro Station, and then take a Highway 17 bus to San Jose Diridon Station. From there, you can take an Amtrak train directly to Davis (from the same station). The Highway 17 bus costs $4 each way, and the train costs $29 each way.

Greyhound is cheaper ($19 each way), but although there is a station in Santa Cruz, the nearest station to Davis is in Sacramento. So if you have some way of getting from Sacramento to Davis, that would be the cheapest way.

Also look into the new program Zimride that is offered at UCSC, it's an app on Facebook that you can use to find rides offered by other students.

You can take the 16 bus from UC Santa Cruz to the Santa Cruz Metro Center. Then, at the Santa Cruz Metro Center, transfer to a Highway 17 Express bus or Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach and take that bus to the San Jose Diridon train station. There you can take a train to Davis. The whole trip takes about 4 hours 10 minutes plus layovers. It costs $1.50 to ride the 16 bus one-way to the Santa Cruz Metro Center, $4 to ride the Highway 17 Express bus or the Amtrak Thruway Motorcoach one-way to the San Jose Diridon train station, and $29 to take the train one-way to Davis. So your total one-way fare is about $34.50, I guess.
