Called New Mexico to distinguish it from existing Mexico. Clever way to name a place.

"Nuevo Mexico" was apparently the name given by Spanish explorers in the 1560s to those lands lying north of the Rio Grande River (i.e., north of "old" Mexico).

For the same reasons there are: New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New Orleans and many other "news" in this country... Either the founders thought the new places reminded them of they're old home. Or they were incredibly unclever.
