The Bay area is economical? Actually, the bay area is the most expensive area in CA to live in. Try some off the beaten path cities. Cities that tourists don't flock to. It also depends if you want north or south. Eureka might be great for Northern, but anything south of Ventura is going to be pricey in Southern CA. Outside the major cities and a few miles from the cost will be your best bets. Perhaps Torrance in LA, Huntington Beach in OC, and Encinitas in San Diego.
